Steven Low Thia Kwang, ceramicist

The amazing formation of nature and her smaller inhabitants feature strongly in the sculptured artworks of ceramicist Steven Low. Steven’s fascination in the tropical island landscape began as a young boy growing up in rural Singapore and has led him to a continuing exploration and portrayal of nature’s artistry.

His formulation and design of new glazes for each landscape series exemplifies his drive to match nature’s luxuriant colour scheme and unique patterns. Each series of his work is uniquely textured, glazed and fired, enticing the viewer to feel the surface and explore further.

A graduate of Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under Peter Low, Steven has held numerous group exhibitions in Singapore and other parts of the world such as Hong Kong, Peru, Malaysia, Australia, France and China. His sculptures are represented in a number of Singapore public and private collections including the Singapore Civil Service; Singapore Ministry of Manpower; Singapore Management University; and The Shangri-la Singapore.

Steven’s creative repertoire extends beyond ceramic sculptures. In 2000, Steven won the Singapore Champion award at the National Sand Sculpture Competition held at Sentosa, Singapore. For official launch in Singapore of Biopolis – Asia’s centre of biomedical sciences research and development in 2003 – he was commissioned to paint “In The Beginning”, a series of composition in acrylic medium
